Le Pre de la Lande
Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux
After spending years as French wine merchants, this husband and wife team decided it was time to start making wine for themselves and bought a 22 hectare property in Bordeaux. Situated on the far eastern edge of the Right Bank, Sainte Foy is located along the Dordogne River and has hilltop vineyards with an abundance of clay and limestone soils. These soils are best suited for Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Working strictly organically, the couple is producing honest Bordeaux wine with honest prices. While the AOC permits yields of up to 50L/ha, here they are kept to 35L/ha. Most of the vines were planted in the late 1960s. Of the 22 ha, 12 are dedicated to red grapes. All fruit is hand harvested. After primary fermentation is complete the wine is allowed to mature in stainless tanks for 8-12 months prior to bottling. That's really all there is to it. It's a terrific little Bordeaux that doesn't fall prey to the recent trends of the area that have resulted in a lot of wines with extreme levels of high alcohol and low acidity. Le Pre de la Lande strikes a wonderful balance of pure Bordeaux fruit with ample acidity that keeps the wine refreshing.
