PIAN DELLE QUERCI
Tuscany - Brunello Montalcino Docg
http://www.piandellequerci.it/
We owe the wonderful discovery of Pian delle Querci to two Italian friends who are fine connoisseurs of the Montalcino appellation: Franco Traversi, owner of a wine-store in Florence, and Armando Castagno, chief taster of the AIS 'Duemilavini' wine-guide in Rome. The exquisite Pian delle Querci 2005 Brunello and 2004 Brunello Riserva drew their attention at the recent '2010 Benvenuto Brunello Tasting' in Montalcino (the official presentation to the press of the new Rosso / Brunello / Riserva vintages, organized every year by the Producers' Association)...so they alerted us on this very promising, if almost unheard-of, family-run estate tucked in the North-Western corner of Montalcino. We immediately collected samples and appointed a visit to the estate, where we met Angelo & Angelina Pinti, owners and winemakers. Done deal!
The 11 Ha. vineyad is nestled in the extreme North-Western corner of the Montalcino Docg appellation, side by side to other prestige estates such as Castiglion del Bosco, Casato Prime Donne and Abbadia Ardenga. In these northerly reaches Sangiovese Grosso (or Brunello) yields a fragrant, elegant, medium-alcohol style of Brunello, reminiscent of ripe red cherry fruit, violets and cinnamon stick. Angelo and Angelina Pinti strive to emphasize purity and classicism in their Rosso and Brunello, pursuing a minimally intrusive winemaking: fermentation in a mix of cement and stainless steel vats, 100% ambient yeasts, medium to long maceration time (min. 2 weeks) and a slow, quiet élevage in 25 to 35 Hl French oak casks. The resulting Rosso and Brunello offer an umistakable expression of authentic, unadulterated Sangiovese Grosso, in terms of both color, aromas and flavors. Last but not least...the super judicious prices make these Montalcino wines an unreal bargain in this otherwise expensive appellation.
