CA' LOJERA
Lombardy - Lugana Doc
For those who love the delicate taste of Lugana, the little great white grown on the southern bank of the Garda Lake in Northern Italy, between Brescia and Verona, Ca' Lojera needs little if no introduction. This is - and has always been - a reference estate for the appellation, along with their neighbours Ca' dei Frati.
Franco and his wife Ambra Tiraboschi run this 8 Ha. estate since the mid 1980s, doing everything by themselves, from the farming of the vineyards to the vinification of the grapes, form the design of the labels to the bottling and packing! The Cà Lojera vineyard is quite unique in that: 1) it is still tended with the traditional Pergola system, with most vines around 40 year old; 2) it is the closest to the Lake shore in the whole appellation (along with Cà dei Frati's), therefore affording a special terroir of deep clays rich in calcium carbonate, making for unusually full-bodied, sapid/salty and long-lived Lugana.
Franco and Ambra firmly believes in the ageing potential of Turbiana, the native white variety Lugana is 100% made from (recent DNA tests proved it to be a genetical variation of Verdicchio), therefore they produce a rare Lugana Superiore selection, besides the fresh, easy-drinking vintage Lugana Doc. The Lugana Superiore selection ages in stainless steel vats for...5 years prior to bottling and commercial release. This year Franco and Ambra released the 2005 Lugana Superiore Doc, with a total cellar ageing longer than that of a vintage Brunello or Barolo! The sumptuous aromas of tangerine, hay and honey represent a great tribute to the aromatic potential of mature Lugana.
