Domaine des Gauletteries

Jasnières

Wine has been made in these ancient and historical cellars for five generations but it wasn't until 1984 when Raynald and Francince Lelais took over complete responsibility for the wines.  Since then the couple has worked with uncompromising integrity to obtain wines that are true exemplars of the region.  It would be hard to argue their efforts have not been successful for today Gauletteries has to be considered one of the very best in the area.  When Raynald took over the domaine in the 1980s it was still relatively small.  After successive strategic and careful purchases and lease agreements of several of the best plots in the region, the Lelais' now farm almost 17 hectares that are planted to grapes.  While this would be considered a very small domaine in an area like Bordeaux, they produce nearly 20% of the wine coming out of the tiny Jasnières appellation and take it as a sense of pride to be the benchmark of the area.

Besides the acquistion of key vineyard sites such as Les Gargouilles and Clos Saint Jacques, Raynald had the keen sense to do away with the old chestnut casks used by his grandfather and now employs fibreglass tanks in the cellar.  This move to fibreglass allows better control over fermentation temperatures and permits the wines to be more expressive of their place of origin with a freshness and purity that was dulled by the old wood.
