For five generations the Fenocchio's have been tending vines and harvesting Nebbiolo grapes in the Bussia Cru of Monforte d'Alba, deep in the heart of the Barolo Docg appellation. Estate vineyards total 10 ha., for the most part concentrated in the Bussia and Castellero Cru in Monforte d'Alba. Two tiny parcels of old Nebbiolo-da-Barolo vines are also found in the renowned Crus of Cannubi (Barolo) and Villero (Castiglione Falletto), resulting in two dedicated single-vineyard Barolos.
The yearly production barely reaches 45,000 bottles, with a little more than half of this being Barolo. The classic Barolo Docg without vineyard designation is in fact a vineyard blend of Bussia and Castellero. A special mention goes to the Langhe Nebbiolo, produced from declassiefied Nebbiolo-da-Barolo grapes picked in the Bussia vineyard: this is a little jewel wine delivering all the unmistakable floral complexity of Nebbiolo without the burden of the long ageing in wood and the relative austere tannins. Intense perfumes of pomegranate, geranium, ginger spice and iron are a birthmark of Fenocchio Langhe Nebbiolo.
Claudio Fenocchio and his wife supervise all activities in both vineyard and the cellar. Claudio has long embraced 'lotta integrata' for the vineyard management and ambient yeast fermentation, and he is now working on a quite revolutionary new technique of super long maceration for his Barolo Bussia (the skins are let soaking into the must for 3 months to extract the maximum aromatic potential and at the same time make the 'heaviest' grape tannins break down and precipitate). Fenocchio's wines are neither filtered nor cold-stabilized, and sulfur usage is kept to the minimum necessary to ensure microbiologic stability for long distance transportation, therefore an appropriate handling and storage at controlled temperature is highly recommended.
